When it comes to skin health, sunscreen is an essential product to help prevent skin damage caused by sun exposure especially for those with eczema-prone skin. Sunburns damage the skin barrier, which is already compromised in people with eczema, and can lead to flares. Finding the right sunscreen is a daunting task, and becomes even more difficult when you or your child suffer from eczema and need to pay close attention to the ingredients list and potential skin irritants or allergens.
More important than what to look for in sunscreen is what to avoid. If you have eczema, it is crucial that you look for fragrance free skincare products because often fragrances can trigger allergic reactions among those with sensitive skin and could lead to eczema flare ups. Equally important is avoiding irritating chemicals in sunscreens such as base, alcohols, or certain preservatives. Chemical sunscreens use chemical filters that undergo photo reactions when exposed to the sun’s rays. Some of the chemical filters could disrupt hormonal balance and lead to safety concerns. Many spray sunscreens use alcohol which can cause irritation and a stinging sensation for those with eczema, therefore should be avoided.
Mineral-based sunscreens are safer choices. They are formulated with the active ingredients such as titanium dioxide(TiO2) and zinc oxide(ZnO), which are safe for kids. Both are approved for use among the eczema population by the National Eczema Association. UV arrays cover a broad range, UVA rays penetrate skin further and lead to pre-aging, and UVB rays cause sunburns, so it’s important to look for a sunscreen that is labeled as providing broad spectrum protection and at least an SPF of 30.

Don’t forget to stay safe by reapplying sunscreen every two hours(at least) or immediately after swimming. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to ears, hands, and feet. If you are using a product for the first time, we recommend testing the product first by applying a small amount to your wrist and watching for any allergic reactions symptoms for the next 24-48 hours.
